I Resolve

January 1, 2010

Anyone else feel like New Year’s is a lot like Lent? I wonder what Lent in DC will be like …

On to my resolutions.

Here I am coming into the new decade!

It’s a helluva lot, but I’m a busy girl, and I already do most of these things, just not enough or well enough.

-This one’s simple and inspired by a chick flick. I love food, and I love feeding people. I’m going to cook something new and exciting once a week, plus something old and good every other week. 52 new recipes, 28 things I’ll be better at making. The newbie doesn’t have to be Julia Child or fine cuisine, but it’ll be real, homemade, and new. The oldie is not to be chips, salsa, and shredded cheese or pita and hummus (my laaazy meals). I’ll blog my culinary adventures. Duck en croute is bound to make the list. Lobster thermidore? If I take a week off for, say, Restaurant Week, I’ll make it up. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Holidays From a Joyous Willow

December 5, 2009

It’s been a month since I’ve updated. I’m busybusybusy. I had to take a weekend sabbatical to cook, read, write, bake, think, sleep. I’m happy though, very happy. I love DC.

Happy Holidays to everyone everywhere! Light up your Hanukkah bush and roll some snowmen! It’s snowing in Rosslyn.

Here’s an video that pretty much sums up my Thanksgiving:

Savory mushroom and chicken pudding

October 5, 2009

According to Julie and Julia, which I saw last weekend and loved, Julia Child and co-author of Mastering the Art of French Cooking Simone Beck had a running disagreement over whether to measure.

I say no! (Sorry, Julia.) Estimate. Approximate. Guess. Unless you’re baking, of course. Then you’re in tricky territory. I’ve tried many a pancake recipe, but none get close to the “original” pancake recipe in my edition of Irma Rombauer’s The Joy of Cooking. (I believe it’s the 75th anniversary edition.) It all comes down to having the right amount of baking powder!

One of the tastiest things I've ever made.

One of the tastiest things I've ever made.

Getting back to shrooms and savory puddings, don’t measure! You’ll see the amounts in my link to the original recipe, but they’re not all that necessary. Yes, increase eggs and cream if you add tons more bread. But really, this is a season to taste type thing. Read the rest of this entry »

Summer

June 13, 2009

I just wanted to say I love summer, lazy, long, delicious summer. I’m enjoying every minute of this one. I know, it’s not even summer yet!

Last Import-0

At this particular moment, I’m the only one in our gorgeous beachy Bay St. Louis house for at least another 24 hours if I so wish. Today in my swimsuit and a sun dress, I rode my dad’s rusty bike (with milk crate tied to the back) to return a Faulkner compendium to the library trailer and request on inter-library loan “Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant.” Read the rest of this entry »

Aluminum foil, the best campfire buddy ever

August 15, 2008

About a month ago I went camping in the Smokies. My friend insisted he needed to bring a pot (turned out to be a small non-camping-style skillet). I said just go bare with some foil. I managed to convince him not to bring any pot/pan-like items.

Behold, giant campfire pancake in aluminum foil:

I was going to put it on a stick (just make the batter less runny). But we had foil, so why bother? Campfire pancakes or biscuits or what-have-you are a great idea. Read the rest of this entry »
